What is Equine Osteopathy?
Equine Osteopathy is a form of musculoskeletal therapy for horses that is derived from Osteopathy for humans. Osteopathy works with the horse's entire body. Techniques used in an Osteopathy session will help to address issues such as stiffness, pain, muscle tension, blood flow and range and quality of motion. Addressing such issues can help to improve health and help to give the horse the opportunity to heal itself. Osteopathy works in a way that could help the horse at all levels, from the superficial through to the deep visceral. Techniques I will use include; joint mobilisations, functional release, stretches, myofascial release, relaxation techniques, and postural work, amongst others.
How do I know my horse needs Equine Osteopathy?
Almost all horses can benefit from Osteopathy! Horses that have regular Osteopathy can not only stay more comfortable and positive in their work, but may also be protected from some injuries by improving posture, maintaining blood flow and range of motion. Even retired horses can benefit, as Osteopathy can help keep aging joints mobile, and help identify when the horse might be struggling.
What happens during an Equine Osteopathy session?
During an Osteopathy session I assess your horse from top to tail and everything in between! This includes movement, conformation, posture, behaviour, hoof morphology, range of motion and soft tissue health. Assessments can also be made of the rider, and the fit of saddle and bridle. In my other capacity as coach and rider, I can assess your horse from the saddle in a separate session. (See services page for details)
What conditions can Equine Osteopathy help with?
Equine Osteopathy may help in the management of conditions such as Arthritis, muscle tightness and injury, body asymmetry, musculoskeletal pain, head-shaking to name just a few. Please remember that Equine Osteopathy is not a substitute for Veterinary care. If your horse is sick or visibly lame, call your vet first. Once a diagnosis has been made then ask your vet if you can book an Equine Osteopathy session.
One of the best times to use Equine Osteopathy for your horse is before your horse appears to have a problem. Using Equine Osteopathy, I can help keep your horse comfortable in his work, I can help identify areas where we need to help him, and potentially help to keep injury at bay. I can give you exercises to use both ridden, and from the ground, and help you to make decisions about whether the involvement of other professionals is necessary, eg Vet, saddler, dentist.
